Wartook Valley Self Drive Tour
Drive south along the Western Highway (A8), ten kilometres out of Horsham you will pass Green Lake. Although it is dry at present, it is usually a great place for a variety of watersports and fishing.
Continue travelling along the Western Highway and turn right at the first Grampians National Park turn off (C222). Continue along the Northern Grampians Road to Wonwondah-Dadswell’s Bridge Road, turn left and follow the signs to Mount Zero.
You will pass Mount Zero Olives which is an olive plantation that hosts olive oil tasting and sales and is open weekends, public holidays and by appointment. You may wish to view the Aboriginal rock art sites (Gulgurn Manja Shelter) at Hollow Mountain (on the Mount Zero Road). Rock climbing can be arranged at Hollow Mountain through Grampians Mountain Adventure Company.
Continue back to Wonwondah Road and turn right to rejoin the Western Highway. Heading south to Dadswell's Bridge you will come across the Giant Koala Tourist Complex. The koala is the made from bronze and is the biggest in the world standing at fourteen metres.You will discover tearooms, restaurant, crafts and souvenirs at the complex.
Just after Dadswell's Bridge turn right onto the Roses Gap Road. You will pass the Beehive Falls, which is a 2.8 kilometre return, medium grade walk, which takes one to one and a half hours. Continue along Roses Gap Road passing Troopers Creek camping ground, just past this area there will be an historical marker that shows the site of an early police station where troopers collected poll tax.
Turn left onto the Northern Grampians Road (C222) (Mount Victory Road), which will take you through the Wartook Valley. Continue on to MacKenzie Falls where you can walk to the base of the falls or to the lookouts. Drive back towards Wartook stopping at Zumsteins which has a picnic ground and historical walk. A worthwhile stop is at the Wartook Valley Gift Shop and Studio and Bush Cafe for a well earned refreshment.
Follow the Brimpaen-Laharum Road passing Schmidt’s Road where you can find The Grampians Horse Riding Centre that offers one hour, two hour and half day rides for beginners and advanced riders with all equipment supplied (bookings are essential). Continue driving along this road until you come to the Henty Highway (A200), turn right heading toward Horsham.
